 The constitution of India provides that the official languages of the Union shell be Hindi in the Devnageri Script. It was originally provided that English should continue to be used for all official purposes until 1965, But the official languages Act. 1963, provides that after the expire of the period of 15 years form coming into force of the consitution English might continue to be used in addition to Hindi for all official purpose of the Union for which it was being used immediately before that day, and for the translation of business in parliament.

 According to the official Languages Rules 1976, an employee may record in Hindi or English without being required to furnish a translation. There of in the other languages and no employee possessing a working knowledge of Hindi may ask for an English translation of any document in Hindi except in the case of legal or technical documents.

 The 58th amendment to the constitution (26 Nov. 1987) authorized to the preparation of a constitution text in Hindi.
 The following 18 languages are included in the English Schedule to the constitution (wigh 1994 estimate of speakers where over 5m).
